For all the coffee enthusiasts out there, owning an espresso machine is a true delight. However, like any complex appliance, espresso machines require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Two critical components that often need attention are the head gasket and shower screen. In this informative guide, we'll take you through the process of changing head gaskets and shower screens on your espresso machine, empowering you to keep your favorite morning companion in top shape.
First, let's ensure we have everything we need to perform the job properly. You'll need a replacement shower screen, a group gasket, a small flat-blade screwdriver to remove the shower screen, and an awl to remove the old group gasket. Reach out to our sales team to acquire the appropriate group gasket and shower screen for your machine.
Step 1: Parts & Tools
The first step is to remove the shower screen. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, remove the shower screen screw from the group head. Sometimes, the shower screen may stick to the inside of the group. In such cases, you can use the screwdriver to gently pry it free.
Step 2: Remove Old Head Gasket
Next, using the awl, remove the old head gasket. On La Marzocco machines, this is accomplished by hooking the awl behind the gasket (as shown in the photo) and pulling it down. Depending on the age of the gasket and the frequency of machine use, the old gasket may break into pieces as you remove it.
Step 3: Remove Coffee Debris
Once both the screen and gasket have been removed, check the group head for any debris or coffee oils. If any residue is present, clean it using a soft cloth. If you notice a significant amount of oil or residue on the group head, it indicates the need for more frequent backflushing of your machine.
Step 4: Clean Group Head
Now that we have a clean group head, we're ready to install the new group head gasket. For a La Marzocco machine, ensure that the beveled side of the gasket faces down towards the portafilter, while the flat side of the gasket is inserted into the machine. Once you have the gasket properly seated, you can use a portafilter handle (it's easiest without a basket in place) to ensure the gasket is securely in place.
Step 5: Replace Head Gasket
Now that the gasket is in place, all that's left to do is to install the new shower screen. Insert the screw through the shower screen hole, and using only your hands to start, thread the screw back into the group head. Be cautious not to cross-thread the screw, as forcing it in can damage the machine. The screw should thread in a turn or two without the need for tools. Once the screw is threaded in, use the screwdriver to properly seat the shower screen. Remember not to overtighten this screw; hand-tight is sufficient.
Step 6: Replace Shower Screen
Now, you're all set. Activate the machine's group and ensure that water does not leak around the edges of the shower screen. Once you've confirmed that the seal and screen are in place, you're ready to get back to what we're all here for: making beautiful coffee.
